Best Sugar Cookies:

2 1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp soda
3/4 tsp salt
1 cup shortening
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 egg
2 tbsp milk

Stir together dry ingredients.  Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla.  Add dry ingredients alternately with milk.  Blend until smooth.  Make round balls of dough.  Place on ungreased cookie sheet.  Flatten with drinking glass, that has been dipped in water and white sugar.   Bake on center rack at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.  Watch carefully as they brown easily.  When cooled, drizzle with icing, if desired.  Recipe makes about six dozen sugar cookies.
